Pak-Norway collaboration: Culture is our priority

The Lok Virsa museum added a conservation laboratory and a storage facility to its complex on Tuesday.

Norwegian Ambassador Robert Kvile inaugurated the two facilities at the Pakistan National Museum of Ethnology Heritage Museum, said a press release issued by the museum on Tuesday.

The two facilities are housed in a two-storey building adjacent to the museum. The building was constructed with input from Norwegian Museum of Folk Art.

Ambassador Kvile said, “Culture is our priority area. Our objective is to help preserve and strengthen Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage.” He added, “We support cultural projects because we are convinced that no nation can thrive without culture and that preserving and strengthening the cultural heritage is important for development and for promoting national unity and tolerance.”

The Norwegian government will continue supporting
Lok Virsa in the future as well, he said.

Lok Virsa’s Executive Director Khalid Javaid said, “This will enable the Heritage Museum to conserve valuable artefacts collected through extensive field work in a scientific manner, strictly in accordance with the professional guidance given by the museum conservators.”

He added that a fresh memorandum of understanding has been signed between Lok Virsa and the Royal Norwegian Embassy, extending the cooperation between the two for three more years (until 2013).

He lauded the contribution on the part of Norwegian government to provide basic infrastructure to Lok Virsa, facilitating it to not only preserve the living folk culture in a modern and systematic way but also to educate and edify present and future generations, in particular students, intellectuals, folk writers and researchers about the traditional culture with special focus on the newly introduced specialised subject on museology in Pakistan.
