The chief of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz, Nawaz Sharif, on Tuesday asked the government to constitute a commission to investigate the attack on the PNS Mehran in Karachi.
“The attack was aimed at destroying our surveillance capability. The planes destroyed in the attack were of high importance in protecting the territorial waters,” he told a public gathering here attended by Senator Pervez Rasheed, MNA Mohammad Safdar Awan, and others.
“The masses are aware of the forces involved in the attack, so the government must probe the incident by setting up an independent commission. The forces behind the attack want to render us incapable of defending the country,” he stressed.
The PML-N chief said the attack on the PNS Mehran could have been averted had the government constituted a commission to probe the US Special Forces operation in Abbottabad in accordance with the resolution of the National Assembly. He said the inability of the rulers to take bold decisions had encouraged the anti-Pakistan forces to conduct such brazen attacks.
Referring to the Abbottabad operation, Nawaz said had he been the prime minister, he would have held the US accountable for conducting the unilateral operation on Pakistani soil. He said the rulers should stop toeing the US line and take steps to protect the sovereignty of the country. “It’s a matter of shame that the US violated our sovereignty but the rulers greeted them,” he remarked.
Holding General Pervez Musharraf responsible for the present mess, Nawaz said the ongoing wave of terrorism, the violation of the country’s sovereignty and the killing of innocent masses in subversive acts, was the fallout of flawed policies of the former military dictator.
He said the security situation was far better when he was the prime minister 10 years ago. “It was I who confronted the Americans and conducted nuclear tests despite the US displeasure back in 1998,” he proudly recalled. Nawaz said a tit-for-tat response would be given to the enemies of the country if they continued conducting unilateral attacks.
INP adds: The PML-N chief said that Pakistan’s sovereignty was being attacked from two fronts i.e. terrorists and the United States, to destabilise it, but vowed that his party would defend the dignity and sovereignty of the country and if needed, they would sacrifice their lives.
He said that there are forces other than terrorists who want to destroy Pakistan but we (PML-N) are not oblivious to these dangers. He said the attack at the PNS Mehran in Karachi was an attack on the roots of Pakistan and there were inimical forces behind it. He questioned as to why the terrorists destroyed two P3C Orion aircraft, which had the capability to track under sea submarines of the enemies.
